Akureyri Airport Looks to Attract More International Airlines

2026-02-15 - 10:48

Akureyri Airport in Iceland is not yet fully utilising its capacity for international flights, according to Sigrún Björk Jakobsdóttir, Managing Director of Isavia Regional Airports ehf. At the moment, only two airlines, easyJet and Transavia, operate flights to the airport, with services on Saturdays and Tuesdays, RÚV reports. What's the Story? Akureyri Airport currently operates international flights with easyJet and Transavia on Saturdays and Tuesdays. The airport can accommodate up to eight international flights per day on days with three domestic flights, and nine flights on other days. International departures are scheduled with a 110-minute gap for flights carrying 80 or more passengers. A group of people coming off an aeroplane at Akureyri Airport. Photo: Golli. The managing director of of Isavia Regional Airports ehf. expressed a strong interest in increasing the number of international routes to Akureyri. Jakobsdóttir explained that the airport has the capacity to handle up to eight international flights a day, on days when three domestic flights are scheduled. On other days, the airport can accommodate nine international flights. However, there are strict scheduling rules in place, with no international departures allowed within a 110-minute window for flights carrying 80 or more passengers. With its strategic location and infrastructure, Akureyri is hoping to attract more international carriers to boost its connectivity. Currently, though, the airport’s potential remains underexploited, with only limited services available for international travellers.
