2026-01-25 - 21:07

A major redesign of Hafnarstræti in Akureyri will prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, making part of the street an eco-friendly zone. The project, approved by the Akureyri Municipal Council, is set to transform the stretch from Kaupvangsstræti south to Drottningarbraut, improving access for those on foot or bike. The redesign will focus on giving vulnerable pedestrians precedence over vehicle traffic, with the maximum speed limit for residential streets set at 15 km/h. The redesign is also in line with the town’s master plan, which aims to create a dedicated pedestrian and cycle route throughout the area, while enhancing the street’s green spaces and aesthetic appeal.
