Bláfjöll ski area in southwest Iceland is preparing to open on Thursday following a winter marked by limited snowfall. According to an article from RÚV, colder weather and snow are forecast in the southwest in the coming days, improving conditions at the ski resort after an unusually mild season. What's the Story? Björgvinsson, operations manager at Bláfjöll, said snow production has allowed only brief openings so far. “Naturally, there hasn’t been much snow this winter, but we’ve been able to produce a few times and twice we’ve gotten to the point where we can open, but then there’s been warmth or heatwaves.” The beginner area has opened three times this winter. Improved conditions up north In contrast, conditions have been more stable at Hlíðarfjall near Akureyri. Brynjar Helgi Ásgeirsson, director of the ski area, said attendance has remained strong despite fluctuations in weather. The resort closed on 20 December after record warmth in Akureyri, where 16.9°C was measured on Christmas Eve, the highest December temperature recorded since observations began. The area reopened after New Year’s Eve and has reported high visitor numbers. “There have only been about 2,000 people on the mountain every single Saturday, so you could say it’s just a packed mountain.” “We’ve just had really good weather, I just don’t remember it like this.”
