Tonight, the people of Grindavík are celebrating a momentous occasion – their first Þórrablót since the town’s evacuation in November 2023. A crowd of around 1,000 guests is expected at the event, which will be held at the Sports House in Grindavík. Ticket sales have far exceeded expectations, with the event now completely sold out. GrThe term blót refers to an ancient Norse sacrificial ritual, symbolising offerings made to ensure protection and prosperity during the harsh winter months. Organiser and committee member Sigurður Þyrill Ingvason expressed his delight at the success of the event: “We are in a really good mood for this. All the preparations have gone extremely well, and I know everything is ready. It has been tireless work lately to get everything set up, so everyone is just happy,” he said. This traditional feast of sacrifice marks a significant step in the town’s recovery, with all proceeds from the event going directly to support the local basketball and football teams.
