Work is under way on a framework plan for rebuilding the town of Grindavík, with a draft expected by Easter. The initiative follows a government request for structured proposals on how recovery should proceed. What's the Story? Around 40 people attended a recent open meeting focused on the local business environment. “There are things like company facilities, insurance, credit, banking, and the like that are important for them to consider when it comes to rebuilding. There are complex issues in that regard,” said committee chair Árni Þór Sigurðsson. Housing and safety have also featured prominently in discussions. “That is, how and when people can start moving back into the houses they used to own. Of course, that is also a complex issue. There are things like safety issues in the town, risk assessments and other things that are burning for these people.” According to the committee, roughly 150 homes have recently been rented out. Most properties in the town were previously purchased by the company Þórkötla, with former owners generally holding first-refusal rights. The committee has also consulted local authorities, emergency services and the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
