Growth in Rental Vans Brings Increased Accident Numbers

2026-03-23 - 10:32

A sharp increase in rental vans on Icelandic roads has been accompanied by a notable rise in traffic incidents, according to newly compiled figures and investigative findings. As reported by RÚV, authorities say the expansion reflects rapid growth in tourism, with many vehicles converted into mobile living spaces. What's the Story? Rental vans in Iceland increased more than thirtyfold over two decades; incidents rose from 7 in 2004 to 157 last year Injury-related accidents involving vans: 18 cases (2004–2014) and 80 cases (2015–2025) Fatal collision in Berufjörður investigated by Transport Accident Investigation Board found vehicle modifications increased injury severity Rental fleet growth Data from the Icelandic Transport Authority shows that the number of rental vans has risen more than thirtyfold over the past two decades. Over the same period, reported incidents involving such vehicles increased from seven in 2004 to 157 last year. Accidents involving injuries have also climbed, from 18 cases between 2004 and 2014 to 80 between 2015 and 2025. A recent investigation by the Transport Accident Investigation Board into a fatal collision in Berufjörður highlighted safety risks linked to vehicle modifications. The report noted that alterations inside a converted van allowed interior fittings to become dislodged during the crash, worsening injuries. “It is clear that the modifications made to the vehicle increased the severity of the injuries sustained by those in the car.” Despite the overall rise in accidents, proportional data suggests a decline in incidents per vehicle, indicating improved relative safety. However, authorities emphasise that the absolute number of accidents remains significantly higher than in previous decades.
