Iceland and Germany Discuss Cooperation and Security in Berlin Talks

Iceland’s foreign minister held talks in Germany yesterday focusing on bilateral relations, economic cooperation and security policy. As reported by the Prime Minister’s Office, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir met with Gunther Krichbaum and Anton Hofreiter in Berlin. What's the Story? Diplomatic ties strengthened Discussions also included developments related to a proposed parliamentary resolution on a referendum concerning Iceland’s European Union accession negotiations. “The Germans are important friends and reliable allies of our Icelanders. For example, we advocate respect for international law, democracy and human rights. We also emphasize a strong business community and a strong EEA internal market,” Þorgerður Katrín said. During her visit, the minister also travelled to Hamburg, where she visited the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, which marks its 30th anniversary this year. She met its president, Tómas H. Heiðar, to discuss its role in international law and Iceland’s acceptance of its jurisdiction. The programme also included a performance by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at the Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall in Hamburg and meetings with regional officials and business representatives.
