Iceland’s Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, has clarified that the country’s decision to spend one billion Icelandic Króna (around 8 million US dollars) on arms for Ukraine is not new spending but part of an already-approved budget. As reported by RÚV, the allocation aligns with Iceland’s ongoing commitments as a NATO member. What's the Story? Iceland will spend 1 billion Icelandic Króna (approx. 8 million USD) on arms for Ukraine. The funding is part of an already-approved budget and aligns with NATO commitments. The money will be allocated through NATO's PURL (Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List) project. Iceland’s contribution was announced at a NATO defence ministers' meeting on 16 February 2026. According to the prime minister, the support is in line with the budget strategy of recent years and is in accordance with Iceland’s obligations to NATO. The funding, which forms part of a broader NATO initiative, will support Ukraine’s urgent need for military equipment, including air defence systems. Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir confirmed the contribution during a NATO defence ministers’ meeting on Thursday. The funds will be channeled through a NATO project known as PURL (Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List), which is aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defence capabilities. Other NATO countries are also contributing to the initiative, with Sweden pledging 100 million US dollars and Norway providing around 1.3 billion Norwegian Krone. Frostadóttir stressed that Iceland’s involvement is simply part of shared international efforts. The prime minister added that while such decisions are part of an overall budget, they reflect Iceland’s ongoing commitment to global security.
