Iceland has been named one of the leading destinations for wellness-focused travel in a new international ranking, reflecting a broader shift in how people approach holidays. Research by William Russell found that 58% of travellers are planning a wellness-oriented trip in 2026, prioritising health and wellbeing over traditional sightseeing. What's the Story? Iceland placed joint third alongside Finland, behind Austria and Switzerland. The country recorded the highest life satisfaction score in the index at 8.1 out of 10 and the highest number of high-rated spas per capita among those analysed. Austria ranked first overall with a score of 9.31, followed by Switzerland at 9.21. Finland and Iceland both scored 9.20, though the two countries performed differently across categories, with Finland noted for walking trails and Iceland for spa availability. The findings also highlight Iceland’s strong performance in wellbeing-related infrastructure, including a spa density significantly above the international average. The study points to a growing global focus on travel experiences that support physical and mental health.
