While Iceland has its own Women’s Day (Konudagur), celebrated around mid-February, the international tradition is never ignored here. However, there is also a local narrative within the global context. Women’s Day is often associated with the strike that took place across Iceland in October 1975. Publicised as Kvennafrídagurinn, or Women’s Day Off, the event brought together 25,000 participants who protested against the gender pay gap and unfair employment practices. The Day Off led to positive changes in the workplace. The following year, Iceland’s parliament passed a law guaranteeing equal rights. In light of International Women’s Day, we have compiled a list of our favourite tracks by remarkable Icelandic artists. The selection ranges from new wave pioneers Grýlurnar and Indian-Icelandic pop diva Leoncie to ethereal mid-2010s tunes by Amiina and Samaris, as well as the alluring dark pop of Kælan Mikla.
