Icelandair has cancelled a number of transatlantic flights after a powerful winter storm caused widespread disruption across large parts of the United States. Five departures from Iceland and five inbound flights from the United States were impacted. What's the Story? Other services between Iceland and the US are currently expected to operate as planned. Ásdís Ýr Pétursdóttir, the airline’s director of communications, said the decision was taken because of severe weather conditions. “We continue to closely monitor how the weather develops and will keep passengers informed if there are further changes to flights,” she said in a written response. The disruption comes as a major storm system sweeps across much of the United States, prompting emergency declarations in several states. Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures are forecast across a vast area stretching from Texas through the Midwest to the eastern seaboard. According to NWS Weather Prediction Center, the conditions can be “life-threatening”, especially for pets. Officials estimate that around 200 million people live in regions affected by the storm. Thousands of flights nationwide have been cancelled, while hundreds of thousands of homes are without electricity, particularly in Mississippi and Texas.
