A new book for Icelandic language learners by Kristín Guðmundsdóttir Handan Dalanna (“Beyond the Valleys”) is the seventh book by the author For learners who have completed Level 3 Icelandic The cover of Handan Dalanna. Courtesy of the author. The book is Guðmundsdóttir’s seventh publication and builds on several years of collaboration with people of foreign origin living in Iceland. It contains 12 short stories, each written to reflect situations that commonly arise in daily life. The writer believes that this way of language acquisition “makes sense—and makes you smile.” Cultural Fluency Rather than focusing only on formal language, the stories introduce vocabulary and expressions that Icelanders frequently use in conversation. In other words, idioms and slang or what the author calls “cultural fluency”. The content was shaped using feedback from members of the international community, who highlighted areas they found most challenging while learning the language. To support readers, difficult words and phrases are explained directly within the text through clear references. The approach allows learners to continue reading without needing to rely on a separate dictionary. The book can be ordered directly from the author: bookskb20@gmail.com.
