Grapevine Events: Holiday Spirit, Röntgen’s Birthday, SAMPL

10 min

After this weekend, it will be December. No judgment if you started feeling jolly a bit sooner, but we say that, now, it’s officially permissible to get into a wintery spirit.

Off of that, there are many festive events around town if you’re looking to buy some gifts, look at some art, or imbibe some jólaglögg. Jólaportið in Kolaportið is running every weekend until Christmas, Jólamarkaðurinn around Austurvöllur opens this weekend (and, if you’re in the neighbourhood, might as well attempt to ice skate on Ingólfstorg). The Christmas Art Market in Mosfellsbær is up and running until December 19, and, of course, Jólaþorpið in “Jólabærinn” runs every Friday-Sunday. Bonus points if you catch the Christmas-themed bus to Hafnarfjörður.

Today at 17:00, BERG Contemporary opens their Christmas exhibition. Just this weekend, newly revived Freyjugata 1 is hosting a studio sale with handmade sweaters, coffee, cake, and more on offer. The Nordic House offers a plethora of exciting events, including a textile workshop and swap market on Sunday with the renowned artist Yrúrárí. On Monday, the artist-run Herma begins their 40-artist-fold exhibition Að missa list á aðfangadagskvöld.

But enough of the holiday events!

Tonight, beginning at 17:00, Open hosts “Shock Ballad,” the finissage to their latest exhibition. The celebration is multi-faceted, beginning with a collective reading of Anne Carson’s works and ending with a set from the exciting and experimental Knackered. You can find the full schedule for the event here.

Tomorrow, there are openings at H,A,K,K Gallery and Vínstúkan Tíu Sopar. At H,A,K,K, you can find 15 artists reflecting on the candlestick, which celebrates its opening at 15:00. At Vínstúkan, Árni Már Þ. Viðarsson opens a solo show of paintings, with a performance from Berndsen to celebrate the opening at 17:00. Earlier, at 15:00, Bókumbók hosts the publishing celebration for the third “KVÁR ER ÉG” zine, a project of Regn Evu and Sindri “Sparkle” Freyr.

If you’re looking for a fun end to your Saturday, we recommend the DJ Flugvél og Geimskip performance at Kaffibarinn, which begins at 21:00.

Lottó & Rami’s High School Reunion: Party At Röntgen

November 28 — 21:00 — Röntgen — Free entrance

Happy Birthday, Röntgen! They’ve been celebrating all week, but tonight is the night to party. The musician Lottó and Rami (otherwise known as Dj MBK) are hosting a “High School Reunion,” promising prizes, performances, and a yearbook for you to sign. While we might advocate for skipping your actual high school reunion, we think this one is worth attending. ISH

SAMPL 7

November 28 — 20:00 — Iðnó — Free entrance

The monthly concert series strikes again! This iteration presents, as always, some of the best voices in Reykjavík: Iðunn Einars, Marsibil, LiteFun, and Öngþveiti. Tonight’s artists draw inspiration from jazz, classical music, hip-hop, and pop — truly a great sample of the exciting music you can find in Reykjavík. ISH

Saga úr Vesturbænum/A Story from the West Town

Runs until November 30 — Various locations

The new collective Hinum Megin/The Other Side presents “Saga úr Vesturbænum/A Story from the West Town,” a series of exhibitions in Vesturbær. Last night, they held their opening art walk, but all exhibitions are open through November 30 during the opening hours of the spaces that hold them. You can find art in Elliheimilið Grund, Blómatorgið, outside Héðinsvöllir, and Kjötborg. All spots are within walking distance, so take a stroll and check out the nine artists’ works. ISH

Song Of The Rebel Flower / Látið blómin tala

November 30 — 20:00 — Iðnó — Tickets for sale at 2.900, 4.900, and 6.900 ISK

We had this last week, but we’re going to leave it in. The final show of Song Of The Rebel Flower’s three-show run comes to a close on Sunday. If you were intrigued last week but didn’t go, now’s your shot!

Choreographer and performer Félix Urbina Alejandre presents Song Of The Rebel Flower, a dance performance with four live musicians exploring belonging, sonic traditions, and nature. It opened last week, within the Reykjavík Dance Festival, but has two more performances, this Sunday and next. The piece is for audiences 16+, and they note the use of lit candles, darkness, loud and stimulating noises, partial nudity, and strong smells (essential oils). ISH
