A senior Icelandic police officer has been appointed to a leading role within the capital’s law enforcement structure, marking a milestone for the organisation. According to a press release, Þóra Jónasdóttir has been named Chief Superintendent of Police in the Capital Region, where she will take charge of a newly defined operational division and join the executive board of the office. Over the years, she has held roles in general policing, served as a police chief, and acted in senior leadership positions. In 2015, she was appointed Assistant Chief Superintendent and later led the Kópavogur police station, covering the Kópavogur and Breiðholt area, until 2024. She has also been involved in developing community policing initiatives. In 2019, she and colleagues in Kópavogur helped introduce a model that has since become an established part of policing in the area. More recently, her work has focused on projects involving children and young people, as well as domestic violence follow-up and regional cooperation. Þóra is the first woman to be appointed to this senior position within the Metropolitan Police, a development noted by the organisation as a significant step.
