Its aim was to evaluate the institute’s current operations, identify challenges, and propose improvements, while recognising the economic significance of marine and aquatic research to Icelandic society. Among the recommendations is a clearer separation between research activities and consulting services within the agency. The report also calls for strengthened human resource management and efforts to improve workplace culture. According to the findings, decisions on the protection and use of marine resources should rely on robust scientific evidence and responsible expert advice. Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, Iceland’s Minister of Industry and Trade, said the report would support ongoing policy work related to the institution. “This report will be useful in the work that has already begun in the ministry,” she said. “My bill on the Marine Research Institute is currently being considered by the Alþingi. Our goal is for the Marine Research Institute to be as well equipped as possible to fulfill its scientific and societal role in the future.”
