The Reykjavík Marathon has been ranked among the world’s most in-demand races, according to new international research. A study by SportsShoes places the Icelandic event eighth globally when comparing online interest with the number of available race places. The findings are part of a wider report analysing global marathon demand ahead of 2026. What's the Story? The Reykjavík Marathon recorded around 31,100 searches and 519 finishers, equating to 59.9 searches per available place. The report highlights a growing trend of runners seeking international destinations, with Europe accounting for a significant share of the most in-demand events. Races in Switzerland, Austria and Norway all feature prominently in the top rankings. The Big Five Marathon in South Africa ranked first overall, followed by the Antarctic Ice Marathon and China’s Great Wall Marathon. Despite high global recognition, larger races such as the London Marathon did not rank among the most in-demand events when adjusted for participant numbers. The Reykjavík Marathon, typically held annually in August, attracts both domestic and international participants.
