The Icelandic Road Administration has outlined proposed toll charges for the new Ölfusár Bridge, including discounted rates for smaller vehicles, ahead of its planned opening next year. As reported by RÚV, the authority’s latest status report states that a single journey across the new bridge would cost 495 krónur for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes. What's the Story? Toll of 495 krónur proposed for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes on the new Ölfusár Bridge, with up to 50% discount for 100 trips; 800–1,700 krónur for heavier vehicles Opening scheduled next year near Selfoss; older bridge to remain in use with weight restrictions Around 36% of traffic expected to use new bridge with tolls (approx. 6,500 vehicles per day initially); majority projected to remain on existing bridge Photo: Pxhere. Creative Commons. Traffic Pricing Plans Drivers making frequent trips could receive a volume discount of up to 50% when purchasing 100 crossings. Fees for heavier vehicles are set at 800 krónur for those between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, and 1,700 krónur for vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes. Despite the new infrastructure, most drivers are expected to continue using the existing bridge in Selfoss. In 2023, average daily traffic on the older Ölfusár Bridge reached 14,500 vehicles, a 3.5% increase on the previous year. Even after the new crossing opens, an estimated 64% of motorists are projected to remain on the original route. The Road Administration anticipates that the new bridge will primarily serve through traffic. With tolls in place, around 36% of vehicles are forecast to use the new bridge, equating to approximately 6,500 cars per day next year and 9,000 by 2040.
