Selfoss Sees Commercial Growth with New Bridge and Retail Moves

2026-02-22 - 07:35

The upcoming project of the Ölfusár Bridge is driving significant business growth in the eastern part of Selfoss. As reported by RÚV, businesses are increasingly flocking to the east side of the town. One of the latest additions to the area is the Álnó store, which has relocated from Hveragerði to the Austurgarður shopping centre in Selfoss. What's the Story? The new Ölfusár Bridge is attracting businesses to the eastern part of Selfoss, sparking rapid commercial growth. Álnó, a long-standing store from Hveragerði, has moved to the Austurgarð shopping centre as part of the expansion. Mayor Bragi Bjarnason believes the new developments will strengthen, rather than compete with, Selfoss' existing city centre. Hveragerði. Photo: Debivort. Wikimedia Commons. Public Domain. Bragi Bjarnason, Mayor of Árborg, highlighted the impact of the new bridge on local development. He stressed that the construction of the new bridge and road improvements are making this region more attractive for businesses. Plans for significant growth in trade and services are already in motion, especially along both sides of the Ölfusá River. This is evident with companies like Penninn/Eymundsson moving from Selfoss’ town centre to the Austurgarður shopping area. While some might wonder if this growing commercial area competes with Selfoss’ existing city centre, the mayor reassures, “Selfoss and its surrounding areas have always had a strong retail and service sector”. “The new developments are simply strengthening the area, not replacing what’s already here”, the mayor says. “It’s all about providing more options for residents and visitors alike.” As Selfoss continues to evolve, the bustling commercial scene looks set to thrive, with the new bridge at its heart. The new Ölfusár bridge is due to open in 2028.
