Most Icelanders travelled abroad last year, with southern Europe emerging as the leading destination, according to new survey data. Spain and Portugal accounted for more than half of all foreign travel, followed by the British Isles, Denmark, the United States and Canada, Germany and Italy. Despite increased discussion around environmental issues, 65% of respondents said they did not intend to reduce their international travel. Domestic tourism also remained strong, with around 84% travelling within Iceland. Popular paid activities included visits to swimming pools and hot tubs, used by more than half of respondents. Nearly half reported returning to the same destinations, even though 75% expressed interest in exploring new areas. Looking ahead, a quarter of respondents plan to travel more domestically this year, while 27% intend to increase international travel. Interest is also growing in viewing the total solar eclipse expected in August, with many still undecided about where to watch it.
