Strong Winds and Sleet Expected Across Iceland

A developing low pressure system to the south of Iceland is expected to bring strong winds, sleet and hazardous travel conditions across the country on Sunday. According to the weather report from the Icelandic Met Office, southeasterly winds will strengthen through the day, first affecting southern areas around midday before spreading towards the north-east. In the south-east, the speeds could increase to between 10 and 18 metres per second, although calmer conditions are expected further west. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain between 0°C and 5°C. Conditions are expected to ease later in the evening, with lighter and cooler winds moving in from the north-east. Windy Conditions to Persist on Monday Another low pressure system is forecast to arrive on Monday. This could bring increasing easterly and south-easterly winds, along with snowfall or sleet in some regions. Rain may develop in the afternoon as wind speeds reach 10 to 18 metres per second, although north-eastern parts of the country are expected to stay largely dry during the day. Driving conditions remain difficult nationwide. Icy patches have been reported on major roads around the capital region, while snow and ice cover roads in the south-east. Dynjandisheiði mountain road has been closed and is unlikely to reopen before Monday.
