A mountain road in south-west Iceland was temporarily shut after several traffic accidents in severe winter conditions. Police said the route across Hellisheiði remained closed for around an hour following crashes near the ski lodge in Hveradalur. Photo: Art Bicnick According to officers from the South Iceland Police, two separate collisions involving two cars each happened at different times in the same area. The national broadcaster RÚV reported earlier that eight vehicles had left the road as drivers struggled with the weather. Chief Superintendent Magnús Ragnarsson confirmed that three people were taken to hospital for medical checks after the incidents. Their injuries were not believed to be serious. Rescue crews and other emergency responders were deployed to assist stranded drivers and help clear the route. Authorities said conditions on the heath were extremely difficult, with sheets of ice, drifting snow and near-whiteout visibility making travel hazardous.
