A group of volunteer cooks in Iceland are helping to brighten Easter for children from low-income families by distributing hundreds of chocolate eggs. As reported by RÚV, the initiative, run by the organisation Hjálparkokkar (Helping Chefs), has spent the past decade providing seasonal gifts to youngsters whose families may otherwise go without. Its founder, Hildur Oddsdóttir, said her motivation comes from personal experience of financial hardship. She understands the difficulty of being unable to afford treats for one’s children, and has made it her mission to offer support to others facing similar challenges. This Easter, hundreds of eggs will be given to families who cannot afford them. Donations from businesses have also helped sustain the project, particularly during the Christmas period. Hildur said it is troubling to see how many children are living in poverty in Iceland, adding that those seeking help should always be treated with dignity and respect. Families are invited to request items from the published list, after which Hildur purchases the eggs and arranges for them to be collected from her home.
