Weather Warnings Issued as Conditions Worsen Across Iceland

Yellow weather warnings are set to take effect across much of Iceland later today. As reported by RÚV, strong winds and snowfall expected to affect travel conditions. What's the Story? Snow and wind The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued alerts for Faxaflói, South Iceland and Southeast Iceland from late afternoon, with most regions covered except the northeast and Eastfjords. Warning will be active from 16.00, though icy and snow-covered roads have already been reported in several areas. Difficult driving conditions are expected on key routes including Reykjanesbraut, Kjalarnes and Hellisheiði, with reduced visibility due to snowstorms. Wind gusts may exceed 35 metres per second in exposed areas such as Hafnarfjall. Several mountain roads in the northwest are expected to experience blizzard conditions this evening. Some routes, including Holtavörðuheiði, Öxnadalsheiði and Brattabrekka, have reopened after earlier closures, while others remain affected by ice or snow. In East Iceland, efforts are ongoing to reopen Fjarðarheiði and Fagradalur following heavy snowfall.
