Westfjords Faces Power Cut Due to Severe Weather

2026-03-21 - 09:32

A power outage affected the Westfjords on Friday evening. Residents across the region experienced disruptions after the power transmission line Mjólkár 1 tripped. The line, which feeds into the national grid, malfunctioned twice, causing power losses in several areas. What's the Story? Power outage occurred in the Westfjords due to Mjólkár Line 1 tripping. Outage began at 9:30 PM; backup power in Bolungarvík was delayed. Dýrafjörður lost power for 30 minutes; electricity has since been restored. Birgir Örn Birgisson, regional manager at Orkubú Vestfjarði in Ísafjörður, explained that the bad weather was to blame for the line failure. When the line was reconnected, it tripped again shortly after, but Birgisson confirmed that backup power remained in place, preventing another outage. While the Dýrafjörður area was without power for about 30 minutes, the situation was quickly resolved, and electricity was restored. Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain patient as Orkubú Vestfjarði works to ensure power remains stable. Birgisson has also encouraged residents to report any further power issues tonight.
