2026-02-22 - 13:15

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a severe weather warning for parts of Southeast Iceland, particularly Mýrdalshreppur with Mýrdalssandur and the Eyjafjöll mountain range affected. The agency is warning of significant disruptions to travel. The residents and visitors are advised to expect a northeasterly storm, with wind speeds potentially reaching up to 18 metres per second, accompanied by snowfall and rain. What's the Story? A yellow weather warning is in place for Mýrdal, Mýrdalssandur, and Eyjafjöll due to a northeasterly storm. Winds could reach 18 metres per second, causing travel disruptions, especially near Eyjafjöll. Snowfall is expected in East Iceland, while most areas will stay dry with frost. The storm is expected to continue until the morning, with conditions worsening under the Eyjafjöll mountains. This may lead to difficult travel conditions, especially on roads prone to heavy snow accumulation. The weather service has urged caution for anyone planning to travel through these areas. In other parts of Iceland, particularly East Iceland, light snowfall is expected, though most regions will remain dry. Frost will settle across the country, with temperatures ranging between 0 and 6 degrees Celsius. However, the northeast is likely to remain largely dry, with temperatures in the afternoon ranging from 2 to 7 degrees Celsius, signalling a slight warm-up as the day progresses. Motorists and travellers are advised to stay updated with weather reports and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
